A Chalkworthy Makeover

One of the things I was most excited to finish in the nursery was Baby Girl’s dresser. I’m not totally sure why, but I think the idea of being able to wash all of her clothes, organize, and finally store them in her room makes it feel real. This little girl is actually going to live here, in our house. In her room. That’s still kind of hard for me to believe, but now that I can open her dresser drawers and see all of her (tiny!) clothes in there waiting for her, it brings things into perspective.

We decided awhile back that we wanted to turn her closet into a dresser/vanity area to maximize space in the room. As she’s got the smallest room in the house, we need to be smart about how we use it. Once you add a crib, glider, and changing table to a room, there’s not a whole lot of space for much else! SO, sticking the dresser in the closet seemed like the best way to go.

The only problem? We had to find a dresser that fit just right inside, which took some hunting around. Thankfully, the Habitat Restore came to the rescue yet again and we were able to score this solid wood dresser that fit the measurements we needed. We did have to take the top off in order to get it inside, but all that took was removing a few screws and then reassembling everything after all was said and done.

Now that we had the dresser itself, it was time to give it a makeover that would fit in with the look we were going for in the room. If you remember back in our first house, we partnered with Giani Granite to re-do our downstairs bathroom vanity. We had such a great experience that when they asked if we’d like to test drive their Chalkworthy chalk paint line, we said SURE! That was back before we moved and now that we’re settled in enough to be back in the swing of projects, we thought a dresser for the little lady’s room was just the thing to give Chalkworthy a try!

I’ve never used chalk paint before and I have to say- it was so easy! The first thing we did was wipe everything down with a damp rag to get rid of any dust or dirt. No need to do any sanding (I’M IN LOVE), just a quick wipe-down.

After that, it was time for a little bit of color mixing to get the right hue. Chalkworthy has a whole line of different colors, plus you can mix them to make custom colors! They have a whole line up on their website with instructions on how to achieve each look… those colors in the middle strip below are custom mixes… HERE is the link to that page on their website. Here are a few of the options we looked at for the dresser…

In the end, we decided to go with a medium blue/gray, called “Huckleberry” (middle row, far left)… a mix of a few of their other colors. The neat thing about mixing colors is that you can continue to tweak and change until you have exactly the shade you want. While Huckleberry was our starting point, we ended up making a color that was a little more blue and a little less green- I believe the final product was made using 1 part Bluebird and 2 parts Dusty Miller. All we did was leave out the green-ish Farmhouse (which makes it the true Huckleberry color) to get a bluer end result.

After we got the color we were looking for, it was time to paint! Chalk paint is different than regular paint… thicker and more concentrated. Because of this, it only took two coats to get full coverage.

After all of the painting was done and completely dried, it was time for the final step- sealing the project with a clear, soft wax. This helps protect your project from wear and tear, paint scratches, and dings.

Chalkworthy has a great brush for applying the wax- it really helps get full coverage with just one coat! The trick with the wax is that a little bit goes a long way… think of it kind of like lotion for the piece. After the wax has been applied, wipe off the excess with a clean, lint-free rag and let it dry completely. And that’s it!

Here’s how our dresser turned out after all was said and done…

The only thing left to do was to reattach the top and find some hardware that complimented our new paint job! Hobby Lobby to the rescue… I found these gleaming gold drawer pulls that just popped against that blue color (and tied in with some other accents in the room).

We had to do some retrofitting to get the pulls to work (they were not the same size as the last drawer hardware), but a few extra holes with a drill and some gold screws later and we had ourselves brand spankin’ new drawers for our dresser. I just love the way the gold and the blue look together!

The finishing touch on the dresser is actually the inside. I wanted to add a little sparkle to finish things off and turns out a bit of pink and gold scrapbook paper was just the answer! A few fun patterns later and our little bug has the cutest dresser drawer insides in our entire house. 🙂

I LOVE how everything turned out! It’s just the right shade of blue, the gold pulls are such a fun accent, and the lining is the perfect way to top things off.

Thank you, Chalkworthy, for making this project possible! Now that the dresser is done, we can finish off the entire closet space… I’m thinking a mirror, lamp, some little clothes hanging on that rod, and a few extra nick nacks to tie things all together. What do you think?
