A Joyful Staircase (and a Bowl of Ornaments)

Slowly but surely, I’m plugging along at sharing all of the Christmas-y decor that’s happening at our house this year and today is no exception! You’ve seen our front porch and the wreath that’s commandeering our door, but how about when you get inside the house? Welcome to the foyer, folks.

Christmas Banister

Let’s break it down. We have this corner cabinet that has served us so well since we got it (read that story here) and one of the great things about it is that it gives me yet another place to house decorations, especially during the holidays. Sometimes I lament that our house is not big enough for a hutch to display pretty dishes, etc., but when I think about it, this is our mini version of such a piece! A little smaller and tucked into the corner, but still serving the same purpose. For the holidays, I dressed it up in all sorts of colors.

First, the top and bottom shelves got green glass bottles and a snowflake or two (remember them from this post?).In the middle, I kept it simple by grabbing a large clear glass bowl and filling it with an assortment of colored ornaments. You could even add a fake, flickering candle in the middle if you wanted. Or a battery-operated strand of white lights woven throughout? Mmm, festive!

The final touch was a green, handcrafted ornament from my trip to India awhile back hung on the doorknob. Just that one ornament adds so much and makes me smile every time I see it.

Along the banister, I tried my hand at some more arrangements of greenery to make the banister look merry and bright for the holiday. First, I made three groupings of tree branches- just like the one for the sled outside.

I tied them on every other baluster and stuck some faux white berries into the top of each.

The finishing touches were these tiny chalkboard signs from Michaels (at $.59 each, I couldn’t resist picking up a bunch!), each with a letter spelling out joy.

I had some leftover “Peace on Earth” ribbon that got wound around the banister to bring in some more of that white, snowy look and that was it!

I love that it’s festive and natural, with a touch of shimmer off of those ornaments in the cabinet. Happy Almost-Christmas, everyone!
