Doing Laundry Just Got Better…

ALERT: You are about to experience never before seen “footage”… get pumped. I also need to confess to you that this space has been like this for close to a year and a half now. Yes, it’s one of those rooms that just hasn’t made its way onto the blog. UNTIL NOW! Hooray!

Today’s fun goes along with my theory that even the small spaces in a house matter. The way that we recognize this in our house is by giving them their own spurt of personality (aka. we paint them cool colors). The same goes for the hub of all clean (and dirty!) clothes… the laundry room. I will be the first to admit- laundry is not my favorite chore (not my least favorite either!), but after we gave the space a little TLC, I found myself not griping as much about having to spend time there… it truly is amazing how the “feel” of a room can affect how you feel about being in the room. With that, let’s get started!

Laundry Room: BEFORE

Our laundry room is special because it is actually not a room in itself- it’s more like a closet. In another room. So, behind those mystery doors in our Spare… you’ll find the laundry mecca of the house! The photo above is what it looked like when we first saw it, and after we painted…

So, the question became this: how do we take this from boring old white to something exciting? We wanted something bright and surprising, but also something that would fit in with the scope of the whole room. In the end, we decided to play off the turquoise/coral theme we had going in the Spare and continue the trend into the laundry room.

The walls got a peppy coat of “Cool Melon” by Behr (the same color that we used on this bed side table) and the shelves, I painted the same light blue as the walls in the Upstairs Bathroom (“Spa” by Behr).

Part of the reason for painting it is because I LOVE color and sometimes get carried away, wanting to put it on all of the walls of the house. However, I am also learning how much I am beginning to love a neutral palette. I found that painting a room that stays mostly behind closed doors a bright and in-your-face color has helped satisfy that urge to rainbow-ify the whole house, without affecting the general aesthetic.

The best part when we first did it was to watch the look on people’s faces when they first opened the doors, having never seen it before. “Oh, this is your laun- WOAH, this is your laundry room!! It has been fun to have such a bright and cheerful space to do an age-old, boring chore. In the next couple of weeks, I’ll show you a few other things we added to give it even a little more charm.

The funny thing is that this has been what the space has looked like for a long time, even though you are just now seeing it (sorry about that). And inevitably, as we grow and develop, so does our taste, which means so does our house. I’ve had some ideas for changing it up even since we’ve done all this. So who knows exactly how long the Cool Melon will stick around? Not to worry, though, I will bring you up to speed on how it looks today loooooong before any new updates or changes are made. 🙂

What does your laundry room look like? Does it make you smile about folding clothes? Any funky colors going on in there?
