Mid Century Modern

This is new for me… a new style, a new challenge, a new partnership. The lovely people over at Chairish.com asked me to do a little bit of dreaming, all with a Mid Century Modern twist. And because I love a good challenge (and getting to design a room without having to do any of the buying, assembly, fitting it through the door, etc.) I gave a whole-hearted UM, YES!!! Pretty please!

My challenge was to create a mood board for a room- any type of room I wanted… but only using Mid Century Modern pieces. Maybe I am design illiterate, but I felt very unfamiliar with this style. However, the more I paged through some of the pieces, the more I realized that I actually love and use some of this type of decorating in my own home! Because we are knee-deep in our own office makeover, I decided to do a mood board for a make believe… office. Here’s what I came up with:

Mid Century Modern Collection

1. Couch– I love when an office can also be a room where people hang out… in a perfect world, I’ll have an office where my kids can curl up with a good book on the couch while I blog away on my computer. 🙂 I like that this one is a moody blue gray- it creates the foundation for the rest of the room and pieces.

2. Desk– How beautiful is this dark wood, L-shaped desk? I imagine that this guy could either provide one person with a massive amount of counter top realty or two people with a nice amount of work space each. The deep color plays off the dark of the couch, but adds some nice natural tones to the mix.

3. Coffee Table– To contrast with the heaviness of the couch and desk, I chose this brass and glass coffee table. I like that it gives off a “see through” vibe, allowing your eyes a bit of relief from the other bigger, boxier pieces. Gotta have something to lighten the mood, right?

4. Desk Chairs- Fun, quirky, different than the big, bulkier pieces… I would love to see a pair of these behind that dark wooded desk!

5. Stools- Again, dreamworld… how cool would it be to give the kiddos somewhere to sit and color while mom catches up on email?

6. Capiz Drum Pendant– Let’s talk lighting. I LOVE this pendant light. The pattern, bling, and light color feels playful and chic next to the gray of the couch and wood of the desk.

7. Desk Lamps– Along that same line of thinking, I tried to lighten things up with a few of these silver spun lamps for the desk. In my book, you can never have too much light in a room.

8. Artwork- I’m a huge fan of this colorful piece and I think it ties in nicely with the blue of the couch, while introducing some new hues to keep things interesting.

9. Globe– I’m a sucker for a good globe. Actually, I’m a sucker for any kind of globe… and this one fits the bill perfectly! It wouldn’t take up any desk or table space and adds another element of art to the room. Plus, if you’re like me and love traveling, a map or a globe can be a good representation of that passion.

10-12. Trinket Time! I found a few things I thought would be good desk or coffee table pieces… the wooden square tray adds great texture to the space, the glass bowl could be filled with flowers or rolled up magazines, and the bright red propeller is just too stinkin’ cool to leave out. Plus it adds another zap of color to compliment the wall art.

So there you have it- some Mid Century Modern office dreaming! A big thank you to Chairish.com for letting me play along! And now it’s your turn… which of those pieces could you see yourself bringing into your own home? Better yet, check out the website for the full Mid Century Modern gallery (here) and decorate your own pretend space! There’s nothing like a good round of “window shopping”.

Happy Friday!
