In the spirit of last week’s laundry room madness, we have a special guest project to highlight today! Hip hip HOORAY!!! Nancy is a good friend of mine from back in my days working at Ocean Grove, NJ in the summers (best.job.ever.) and she sent us a few pictures of her own laundry room redo and the story behind it. Can’t wait to show you the goods! But enough from me, let me turn it over to Nancy…
Our laundry room is more like a “laundry hallway”. When we bought the house, it came with a front loading washer and dryer, but to open them would completely block the door to the garage! Can we say frustrating? Also, the washer and dryer kind of floated on their side of the room with large spaces between them that just ended up collecting dust. The hanging white upper cabinets were ok but their yucky brass knobs and the builder grade off white paint did nothing to help the situation. I’m notoriously bad at remembering to take before photos, but here is one “in progress” where you can see our original front loading dilemma.
Here’s what we did: We purchased a new top loading washer and dryer to avoid the door issues. We had the vent, which goes through our roof professionally cleaned, something that most likely had never been done before. The room got painted my favorite color on the planet, Benjamin Moore’s Palladian Blue and the trim got a bright white. After a good scrubbing of the cabinets they got new brushed nickel knobs. Knobs are like jewelry for your cabinets!
With the appliances moved to one side, we had room for a three drawer base cabinet which we now affectionately refer to as our kitchen annex. Our kitchen is roomy but short on drawers and I was really struggling to find places for all of my small kitchen items that are not used everyday. We bought a white base cabinet from Home Depot and popped it into place. I went to a granite yard and selected a remnant which was similar to our kitchen counters and they cut it and finished the edges to my specs. I had to drive around with it in the back of my car until Scott (my husband) got home because at about 200lbs, I could not get it out by myself! It was all worth it because it is perfect!
The styling part was just fun – homes for tins and baskets on top of the cabinets, an old laundry soap ad that was my mom’s that is so darling and some wood art and signs to warm it up a bit. A dear friend painted the teapot on a discarded cabinet door with the edges acting like a frame. The room makes me happy every time I come home.
Wow, great job Nancy! I love the color and the nick nacks to personalize the space. And what a great feeling it is to have a space in your house that brings a smile to your face!
So is anyone else drooling over having a few extra drawers and some counter space in the laundry room? Anyone planning a road trip to Nancy’s house to steal that beautiful tea pot painting? Me too, friends, me too. 🙂
