Chapter 5: Bamboo Blinds

Psst. This post will make zero sense to you if you don’t first read Chapters 1, 2, 3, and 4.

It’s been a couple of weeks since we’ve seen any progress in the Spare. And that won’t do because we have so much further to go in that space! So let’s get back to work in there. Here’s where we left off:

No Spare Closet Doors! We emptied the closet and found new homes for all of the junk stuff, so the next step was doing something about restoring some of that precious hidden storage space we used to have when the closet doors were still in the picture. We wanted to find a way to hide both the upper shelves and the shoe shelf so that we could still use them to store all the not-so-pretty-to-look-at things we have. Here’s the plan for doing so:

Spare Closet PlanningToday we’re tackling the bamboo blinds for the top shelves. Essentially, we wanted something that would cover them, but could be raised whenever we needed to get up there. I grabbed two packs of blinds from Home Depot (you can find them here) that were 35″ long to span the 70″ space we had to cover.

Hampton Bay Bamboo BlindsInstallation was easy. I mean, SO STINKIN’ EASY. All I did was mark the spots I wanted it to hang, made sure the marks were level, and inserted the little hooks into the wall. From there, blinds just hooked right onto the wall hooks and we were done! How many times can I use the word hook? Hook, hook, hook. Now it’s starting to sound weird in my head.

Hanging the BlindsI did that with both sets and then stood back to see how it looked.

Hooray! Hidden storage again!

Blinds DownI love the texture and warmth it adds.

And if we need to get to those top shelves, all we do it raise the blinds…

Blinds Up

Bada bing, bada boom! So that’s where we’re at, friends. Next step: adding a curtain rod and curtain to hide the shoe shelves. After that, it’ll be time to tackle building a desk to fit in our new office nook! I can hardly wait. 🙂
